Chapter 7: 4-year-old, Family bound for the royal capital. (part-2)
“So many people.”
“Yes, that’s right. Everyone is going to depart for the royal capital now.”
Lucia said that, but she was standing alongside Isaac to see everyone off.
The journey to the capital took two weeks on a carriage, so someone young like Isaac couldn’t go.
He will stay in the mansion along with his mother.
“I want to go too.”
Although one day he’d have to live there after entering the royal academy, the royal capital was the heart of the kingdom, constantly swirling in power.
He wanted to get used to it while he still had the appearance of a child.
Being denied the chance to do that, Isaac felt a bit disappointed.
“We can go next year. The journey to the capital is long, so you’re supposed to stay here in the mansion till you’re five-years-old.”
“It’ll be lonely without your father but please bear with me Isaac.”
Lucia said in a wistful tone while stroking Isaac’s head.
However, Isaac wasn’t worrying about that.
“It’s okay, mother. I won’t feel lonely because I have mother and Patrick with me.”
“Heeeyyy…. isn’t that terrible?”
Randolph complained while listening to the conversation between the two.
After hearing their exchange he felt a bit sad. As a result he put his arms together and puffed up his cheeks a bit.
However, it was Randolph, so Isaac could easily deal with him
“I am also an aristocrat. I can bear it without my father…. But…”
“But… I want you to come back as soon as possible.”
With that said, Isaac grabbed the hem of Randolph’s trousers and looked up to him with a lonely look on his face.
After seeing his son like that, Randolph couldn’t complain anymore.
He crouched down on the spot and took Isaac in a tight embrace.
“I’m sorry that I made you feel lonely, but as an aristocrat I need to do this.”
“Let’s go together next year.”
Isaac also embraced him tightly.
That display from his son alone was enough to make Randolph all dere dere.
(TL note: ‘Dere dere’, actually means love struck, but here it was used to show how happy Randolph was due to Isaac’s affectionate display. I used ‘dere dere’ to keep the original feel of the line intact.)
(To be moved by this much alone, what a simple man…. Wait, why am I acting like a villain!)
He regretted playing with a simple man’s feelings.
Isaac wanted to be a king, not a villain who took advantage of people.
Even though this was a predatory-themed game world, he didn’t feel the need to stoop down to the same level.
Isaac didn’t realize that he was already at the same level as them from the moment he aimed for the throne.
“Ara~, seems the woman is desperate to even use her own child to get attention.”
It was Melinda who said that.
It seemed Melinda didn’t like seeing Randolph with Isaac and Lucia.
Melinda glanced at Isaac with cold eyes.
(She doesn’t look bad though …)
Isaac’s experience of playing romance games in his previous life made him think that even a type like Melinda might be cute if he defeated her.
Of course, Melinda’s appearance might be ‘cute’ or ‘beautiful’.
Both of those qualities could win people over to her side.
But Isaac knew the person in question, he knew her quite well, so he knew how ‘ugly’ Melinda actually was.
“Lady Melinda … I have no such intentions.”
Lucia denied her claim.
However, her voice was weak.
After all, Melinda was from a Marquis family.
Lucia couldn’t seem to shake the feeling of inferiority off of herself.
“Well, are you even serious about the current situation?”
“Melinda, quit it. Didn’t you promise that you’d get along after getting married?”
Randolph stopped Melinda before things heated up.
The same situation was repeated a lot of times after their marriage.
So he knew exactly when to stop her.
“This is my way of getting along.”
The quarrel between the couples wasn’t like a dog fight.
However, Isaac didn’t want the boring fight to continue any longer.
So he decided to use Nathan to get rid of Melinda.
“To be able to go to the royal capital… I envy my brother.”
Nathan smiled when Isaac talked to him.
He was young, but quite fat, and had a naturally evil smile.
Maybe it was just because Isaac recognized him as an ‘enemy’.
“It seems that there are many fun things in the royal capital. I’ll enjoy your part as well.”
“Yes, please do, I’ll be thankful for that.”
It was not just about the brilliant sarcasm.
“I’ll pray for your further growth along with your new experiences in the capital.”
Isaac was replying with difficult words regardless of whether Nathan liked it or not.
From the perspective of those around them, he knew that they didn’t expect Nathan to grow any further.
His body was growing, but he still had the intelligence of a five-year-old.
He didn’t just miss out on growing up as a person, but even after being an aristocrat, he didn’t grow up at all.
However, Nathan was still five years old.
He couldn’t grasp the sarcasm in Isaac’s words.
“I would’ve done it even if you didn’t tell me to. I am you older brother after all.”
“That’s right. I’m sorry I underestimated your abilities.”
Isaac obediently apologized.
However, all of Isaac’s words were annoying to Nathan, regardless of whether or not it contained sarcasm.
Even if it was an apology.
Nathan felt inferior to his younger brother, who spoke in a way he hadn’t learned yet.
No one said it directly to Nathan, but his own mother Melinda would sometimes spill out the words, “Why isn’t Nathan as smart as Isaac?”
And Nathan had heard it.
In a sense, when Isaac was born, Nathan had become the victim.
Nathan was somehow sick of Isaac’s attitude.
If he knew the word ‘disrespectful’, he would have realized the reason behind it.
His mother had repeatedly told him that he shouldn’t get along with Isaac, but he didn’t feel like getting along with him in the first place.
“Nathan is also looking forward to his first visit to the royal capital? Then we must hurry. It’s almost our time to leave, so let’s get on the carriage.”
From Melinda to Lucia.
From Isaac to Nathan.
Randolph forcibly cut off their conversations so that no more heated exchanges could be made.
That was Isaac’s aim in the first place.
Unsightly things should be somewhere far away from regular people’s sights.
“It will be a long trip, so please be careful.”
Lucia saw them off with a relieved expression.
Then, she put her hand on Isaac’s head.
“Isaac, Nathan is your older brother, so you should get along with him.”
That was a suitable reply, but Isaac didn’t really intend to get along with Nathan.
However, Lucia was reassured because she couldn’t understand the true intentions of her four-year-old child.
“Then, let’s say farewell to your grandmother and grandfather.”
Lucia and Isaac headed for a place where three carriages were separated.
In the unlikely event that the Marquis of Wellrod were to be targeted, then even if the worst came to pass, their family wouldn’t be completely uprooted.
Although they had escorts, it seemed that the proper rules needed to be followed.
Isaac called out to Margaret instead of Morgan who was giving some instructions to the escorts.
“I will feel lonely when grandma is gone.”
“Please be careful and take care of your body.”
“Yeah, of course. It’s cold so make sure to stay warm.”
“Don’t skip meals and sleep at the right time.”
(Although I’m used to being treated as a child, it still feels a bit awkward when told face-to-face.)
“Lucia, take care of Isaac.”
“Leave it to me, mother-in-law”
Lucia was also a noble daughter.
But taking care of the future heir is more important.
She may be deprived of her inheritance right by Nathan, but Isaac’s education couldn’t be neglected.
So her responsibilities as a mother came first.
Was Margaret done or did she get interrupted?
No one knew.
But Morgan cut into their conversation.
“Isaac is smart, but please teach him about morals and ethics first.”
“Grandfather, I have both morals and ethics!”
“Ha ha ha, unfortunately you have a lot to learn. I hope you can learn everything nicely from Lucia.”
Morgan stroked Isaac’s head.
Isaac’s morals were influenced by his previous life.
He was not a fully fledged nobleman yet.
He may have demonstrated his talents.
But from Morgan’s point of view, Isaac still lacked a lot of things.
However, Morgan knew that he was already an adult.
Given that Isaac was still a kid, he thought it would be terrible to expect anything more from him.
“I understand. I will learn everything little-by-little. Please take care of your body.”
After that, Morgan and Margaret went to the carriage after saying goodbye.
A large procession headed for the royal capital.
While looking at the procession from behind, Isaac thought of the reason behind the procession.
As Isaac had knowledge of the game, he was able to guess the reason behind their visit to the royal capital.
(In the game, there was an event where you met the families of the captured characters at the end of the year as well as the beginning of the year. At the graduation ceremony of the Royal Academy in March and the entrance ceremony in April. I wonder if they are gathering in the royal capital for the same reason.)
They departed in mid-November and arrived at the royal capital in December.
From there, everyone prepared for the year-end and New Year party, and many more social events which would last till spring
Isaac thought that this was all due to the scenario writer thinking, ‘this way it’ll be easier to create an event’.
(It feels like alternate residence duty… but I know that’s not true.)
(TL note: ‘Alternate residence duty’ in japanese ‘Sankinkōtai’, it was a system developed during the Warring states period. The system basically demanded the feudal lords or the daimyo to reside at Edo for a period of time. It was basically a hostage system in which the feudal lords or his family members were at the whims of the ruling family. Please google about it for more. Thank you.)
Isaac’s family wasn’t heading to the royal capital as hostages.
“Maybe they are heading there just to meet up with other aristocrats”, Isaac thought.
Such a big move for no particularly important reason made him sigh.
And he heard not only his own but another sigh.
It was Lucia.
“Every year it’s like this… but I still feel lonely.”
(――Mothers with young children remain with their children.)
Because of such customs, Lucia remained in Welrod after Isaac was born.
Therefore, this season again it will be lonely because Lucia would be separated from Randolph.
Isaac did not miss his mother’s words.
“That’s right. I may be an inadequate substitute for my father, but still, I am here, and there are also Aunt Karen and Tiffany too.”
“Right, let’s get inside the house before it gets cold.”
(Even though I didn’t go to the royal capital, there are still things I need to do. Let’s get rid of them first)
Isaac took Lucia’s hand and returned to the mansion.
