Tensei Kizoku wa Taishi wo Idaku! - Chapter 3: Three-year-old New generation sweets.
The Earl of Halifax, Lucia’s home, has been entrusted with one of the cities in the Wellrod’s territory for generations now and right now, it was being governed by Lucia’s father.
Her brother works as a bureaucrat under the Wellrod family.
Even after marrying Randolph, she doesn’t act conceited but instead behaves with others normally.
Her family also lives in the Halifax mansion but due to political considerations they don’t visit her that much.
But she and her sister-in-law sometimes meet each other to talk about raising children.
Lucia and her sister-in-law Karen; wife of Andy and mother of Tiffany.
That day it was a tea party with Tiffany.
Tiffany was an honour student character with glasses and braided blue hair in the game.
However, Tiffany, who is still three years old, had a short hair-cut that resembled a bob.
She didn’t even have glasses.
She didn’t look like the game character yet.
She smiled. Whenever she smiled, it was as if the surrounding area got enveloped in bright light.
She’s a pretty cute girl.
But even if a pretty girl sat beside Isaac, tea-time was still a major pain for him.
Originally he would’ve devoured all the sweets his heart desired.
However, confectionery in this world was a mixture of a large amount of sugar and flour.
Basically, sugar is a sweetener used by wealthy people, and using heaps of sugar has become widespread as a fitting thing done by the aristocrats.
The cakes lined up before Isaac were the same.
Not only the fresh cream but even the decorative fruits were candied, even the sponge was sweet.
Isaac was tired of sweets that didn’t consider the harmony of the flavours.
The adults consume these normally but it didn’t suit Tiffany, who wasn’t yet accustomed to the taste.
Isaac remembered having tasted various sweets in his previous life.
In the previous life, there were many kinds, and there were many seasonings and everything came in different flavours.
Because of that, it is unavoidable that he couldn’t be satisfied with the sweets in this world.
Therefore, Isaac gave up eating sweets and usually ate chopped dried meat.
He ate dried meat instead of sweets to train his jaw from a young age.
(Sometimes I want to drink beer.)
But his mother, Lucia, was worried about Isaac.
That was also natural.
In which world would you find an infant who preferred dried meat instead of sweets?
On these occasions, she wanted him to eat sweets regardless of his likes and dislikes.
“Hey, Isaac. You’re a boy so you’re probably bad with sweets but you shouldn’t outright hate them.”
Lucia was careful with her words
Isaac was a wise child.
He could tell what he should and shouldn’t do just by paying attention to what people told him.
However, Isaac couldn’t give up on this.
He may be abnormal as an aristocrat, but he wasn’t going to do anything that was equal to directly licking sugar.
“But mom, these are too sweet. I would eat some if they were less sweet.”
“Sweets are supposed to be like this.”
Feeling troubled, Lucia just shook her head and looked vacantly in the distance.
Her glamorous, long dark red hair swayed with each motion she made.
He didn’t know if it’s just the aristocrats, but all the people Isaac had met so far were all beautiful men and women.
Lucia seemed to be about the same age as Isaac was in his previous life, so her charm was especially alluring to him.
“If you don’t like it so much, why don’t you try making it yourself?”
Karen jokingly said.
Isaac was still three years old.
Everyone knew that children couldn’t do that.
However, the party in question wasn’t a normal three-year old.
“Right! I will!”
It was a joke, but Isaac took it seriously.
Lucia and Karen were surprised.
“Issac, it’s difficult to make sweets yourself.”
Lucia tried to stop Isaac.
Even though Isaac was smart, he was still young.
He would have a hard time kneading the dough.
“I won’t make it myself. I’ll ask Alexis to make sweets with less sugar.”
Isaac mentioned Alexis, the candy craftsman of the mansion.
Instead of actually making it yourself, let someone specialized in it make it for you.
In this case, Isaac only had to adjust the amount of sugar going into the sweets.
‘Even when you want it, you don’t necessarily have to make it yourself.’
Isaac thought so. After all, he knew that people couldn’t do everything themselves.
“But craftsmen are proud of their work, so they will surely refuse.”
“I’ll try to convince him.”
Of course, it would be a request coming from the person who has the right to inherit the Marquis family.
Moreover it was a request from a cute child.
“I can’t help it, but if he refuses then just give up okay?”
“Craftsmen are too proud of their work.”
Contrary to his reply, Isaac had no intention of keeping his word.
Everyone wants to eat delicious food.
He thought that if Alexis could taste sweets that tasted like anything other than pure sugar, he’d understand.
“I will go too”
Tiffany didn’t understand the situation.
However, she knew Isaac was going to do something.
So she insisted on joining him.
“Yeah… would it be okay for Tiffany to accompany Isaac?”
Karen asked Lucia.
This is the Marquisate of Wellrod.
An outsider couldn’t just send people to accompany the heir without the Wellrod’s permission.
Even if it was only a child.
“It’ll be okay, they’ll just play around with each other for a bit.”
“Isaac, look after Tiffany okay?”
“Yes. Let’s go, Tiffany”
Isaac took Tiffany’s hand and started walking with her.
In his previous life, he would’ve been too embarrassed to even attempt such a thing, but this isn’t his previous life.
Isaac decided to live a different life from the previous one.
This could be regarded as a starting point for his new life.
Moreover, the other party is a girl, even though it is a toddler.
For a long time, his life didn’t involve any women.
In fact, he was a little excited about his bold actions.
The maid who came with him just in case was looking at the situation with a warm smile.
“That won’t be possible.”
Isaac and Tiffany were disappointed, as Alexis refused their requests.
However, this was something Alexis couldn’t give up on.
“I’m a confectioner for the Marquis family. I have the responsibility to make sweets suitable for the Marquis family. I can’t let Master Isaac eat sweets like that.”
Aristocrats were troublesome.
There were various restrictions alongside their power.
“Keeping your image” was one of them.
Eating sweets with less sugar, such a news shouldn’t make it’s way out.
“The Marquis of Wellrod was in dire situations, so much so that they had to reduce the amount of sugar in their sweets.”
There were chances that such rumours might spread.
The Wellrod’s have to live a life suitable for them, because they are aristocrats.
Isaac was appalled by the fact that he couldn’t eat what he liked because he was from the Marquis family.
“Well then, what about this? Making sweets for the people who work in the mansion. We will test the recipe out on them.”
“It’s not my job. If you want to feed the servants, it’s a job for the apprentice. And the Wellrod’s shouldn’t consume sweets prepared by the apprentice.”
Alexis wouldn’t let his apprentice feed Isaac either.
This does not mean that he was being mean, he was doing that in consideration of Isaac’s position.
“Hmm … then, would it be okay if Tiffany ate it? Although the apprentice made it, it was an apprentice that works for a Marquis family. It wouldn’t be a problem if Tiffany ate it right?”
Alexis thought about it with a troubled face.
There was certainly no problem, but Alexis knew that Isaac would definitely try to eat it.
“… Isaac-sama shouldn’t eat it though.”
“Yeah, it’s okay then!”
It was a suitable reply.
Alexis had heard that Isaac was a wise child.
But he was still a three-year-old child.
Whether he believed it or not, Alexis was in trouble.
“Reduce sugar to 1/3 or 1/4 of the original amount. How about butter cookies that make the best use of the taste of its ingredients?”
Cookies could be made quickly because the baking time was short.
If it took too long, the tea party would be over.
“Then, let the apprentice make it quickly. Please wait for about an hour.”
Alexis directed his apprentice to make the cookies thinking that it’d be helpful for his growth.
“But Isaac-sama shouldn’t eat it.”
Alexis reminded Isaac.
“Yeah, I know.”
Although Isaac said that, he had a nice idea.
(If you have sweets that look delicious in front of you, you’ll just eat them. Especially if you’re a kid.)
Being a child.
Isaac intended to make the most out of it.
He didn’t lie to Alexis.
He intended to keep his promise, but he intended to make an excuse that he couldn’t help but submit to his child-like instincts.
Besides, everything would be fine if Alexis doesn’t come to know about it.
(If I talk to the maids about it then it won’t a problem)
After the cookies were baked, Alexis brought the cookies out with his apprentice.
Apparently Alexis predicted Isaac’s idea.
“As Isaac-sama said, These are butter cookies with significantly less sugar. It’s a significant reduction from 200 grams of sugar to 50 grams of sugar for every 100 grams of flour.”
“That’s a lot of sugar! It’s like you’re using flour as a binder for sugar instead of mixing it with flour!”
(I always thought it was way too sweet!)
The ratio almost made them sugar confectionery rather than sweets.
Aside from the surprised Isaac, Tiffany was chewing on a freshly baked cookie.
Isaac was not the only one who thought that the confectionaries were far too sweet.
Tiffany didn’t like them either.
(I was crazy about sweets like this as well when I was a child.)
Three-year old Isaac thought so while glancing at Tiffany.
The cookies on the plate had a delicious aroma.
“Let’s eat these together Isaac.”
Tiffany picked up a cookie and presented it to Isaac.
Even though she was young, it seemed like she was a good child who offered food to others.
Isaac picked up the cookie, but Alexis called out his name.
With the meaning of “Don’t eat it”.
However, Isaac ignored it and ate the cookie anyway
(Delicious! The sweetness is just right and the flavor of butter is coming out as well. It is nicely baked and has a good texture. After all, this kind of sweetness is the best.)
Involuntarily Isaac’s cheeks loosened up.
After all, nothing was a match for good sweets.
Isaac suddenly felt foolish to have been eating nothing but dried meat.
Alexis yelled at him when he reached out for another one.
“Master Isaac! You said you wouldn’t eat those! … Excuse me, my lady.”
Alexis apologized to Lucia for yelling in her presence.
However, he was still staring at Isaac.
“I can’t help it, they’re so good.”
Isaac picked up a cookie and walked to Alexis.
And then he offered Alexis a cookie.
“People eat dried meat but no one likes to eat salted meat right?”
“Because they are too salty.”
Isaac nodded with satisfaction at Alexis’s answer.
“Then, what about sweets? The current sweets use too much sugar and are too sweet, right?”
Isaac stared at the cookie.
“Right now, sweets with such sweetness are touted as sweets for aristocrats. But when people realize that they are too sweet and do not taste that good whatsoever, the same sweets will be treated as an unfashionable relic of the past.”
(TL note: ‘Touted’, it basically means ‘marketed towards’.)
“Such an era will come.”
Isaac stared into Alexis’ eyes.
“Alexis. This is a turning point.”
Suddenly Alexis grew curious of what Isaac had to say.
“Do you want to be buried in history books as a baker who just made old-fashioned confectioneries with heaps of sugar? Or, as a pioneer of modern confectionery which made proper use of all of the ingredients? How do you want to go down in history? Which one do you think is better?”
The child beside Tiffany uttered these words.
That was not something a three-year-old child would say.
‘—It’s not like that.’
Alexis thought as he received the cookie from Isaac.
And then he took a bite.
(TL note: It means disgusting.)
(Huh? Maybe it wouldn’t taste good to someone accustomed to those overly sweetened sweets …)
He thought Alexis would say it was delicious too.
Isaac was a bit confused, as the reaction he got wasn’t something he expected.
“It’s badly kneaded. It’s too hard. A softer texture would better suit this gentle taste. I can make it better.”
Alexis looked regretful.
Certainly, it was better to feel the aroma of the wheat flour and the flavor of the butter.
Alexis used to use sugar like a fool and no one said anything so he kept doing it.
Because of that, he didn’t even think about something as basic as ‘the harmony of the ingredient’s flavours’.
It’s a shame he didn’t realize it until he was told by a three-year-old child.
“But … this isn’t right.”
However, the common sense of the general public was different.
Basically, sweets that use a large amount of sugar did not suit aristocrats who cared about their body but using large amounts of sugar was still a symbol of higher status.
And even regular people won’t be able to accept such sweets due to the stigma towards reduced sugar being a symbol of lower status.
“That’s not the case. If you say ‘a new generation of sweets that make the best use of the taste of the ingredients’, other people should be able to eat it. I think they will be accepted without any discomfort.”
Everything could be done if it was marketed correctly.
Some people may think that ‘sweets with reduced sugar’ were meant for poor people.
However, when it comes out as a ‘new generation of sweets’, it will be perceived as such.
There’s no merit in hiding it.
It’s okay to say it openly.
“Is that the case…”
“Look at Tiffany.”
She continued munching while Isaac and others were talking.
She didn’t even touch the cakes prepared for the tea party.
She was now obsessed with the moderately sweet cookies.
“She’s eating the ones she thinks are delicious. Kids are honest.”
‘――You are saying that?’
The adults around Isaac thought so.
It’s different for adults, but a child saying something like that would obviously be weird.
“Why don’t you eat one, mother? It’s better than the sweets that only taste like sugar.”
“That’s right. I wonder how it tastes.”
Lucia also ate the cookies while being surprised by her child’s behaviour.
Lucia looked a little unsatisfied. She ate those cookies after eating the overly sweet cakes, but at least it didn’t look like she disliked them.
Isaac also thought a little while eating the cookies.
(Yes, this is a turning point, but not Alexis’s, it’s mine)
(――A little smart child.)
Isaac wanted others to think of him like that, but he gave up.
Nathan was one step ahead of the battle for succession. This much wasn’t enough to get over that huge advantage.
(I have to prove my strength little by little so that the power of his mother’s house can no longer interfere.)
As a display of his determination, he strongly sipped his tea.
You can’t just talk about inheritance all of a sudden.
(It may be a small thing, but I plan to gradually build up my standing among the Marquis families.)
The long, rough, road imposed a heavy burden on Isaac.
Moreover, if he makes a mistake somewhere along the way, he would become a disappointment of a ‘smart child’, so his plan was full of risks.
However, he chose to live a life different from his previous one.
Isaac no longer wanted to regret not doing something in his life.
(I will do everything in my capabilities to achieve my goal.)
(But this achievement isn’t something to be too proud of considering the scale of my plan. No no, it’s still a 3-year-old child doing this.)
(At least, with Tiffany smiling, I can now enjoy these delicious sweets.)
Isaac was satisfied with his small success for now.
