Tensei Kizoku wa Taishi wo Idaku! - Chapter 28: Five-years-old, Encounter with an elf.
Chapter 28: Five-years-old, Encounter with an elf.
Isaac’s “I want to eat matsutake mushrooms” was not a lie.
After lunch, he headed to the forest with five knights in light clothing.
He was coming to the site anyway.
He wanted to eat what he’d find right there.
Under the leadership of two local hunters, they entered the mountains several kilometers away.
(Come to think of it, in my previous life, I used to go bamboo shoot hunting with my family when I was a kid. I’ve never been to that kind of thing with my family in this world. I wonder if the hunting here would be deer hunting or any other big animal hunting?)
It’s good to have a lot of enthusiasm, but it was hard to walk in the forest with small ‘child feet’.
Isaac was thinking about that while being carried by one of the knights.
After he ‘walked’ for a while, a hunter stopped them.
“Hmm, they should be around here. There… there…. Ah! There! Hey look, those are matsutake mushrooms.”
The hunter pointed to the root of a tree.
No one blamed his wording.
As long as the words did not contain any sort of contempt, no one cared about a commoner’s wording.
Honorifics were only used by educated people or those who come into contact with superiors on a daily basis.
――It was strange to talk to a hunter about honorifics and education.
That was common sense in this world.
Isaac learned these things while spending his time alone in the study.
“Oh, so many …”
Isaac had the knight bend down. Bent over, he looked at the matsutake mushrooms.
Approximately 10 matsutake mushrooms the size of 5 to 10 cm were clustered.
“If you go deeper, there are places where they grow in larger clusters. I don’t want to go deeper with aristocrats in tow, so please bear with me.”
The huntsman looked around the roots of nearby trees while talking.
However, Isaac did not want any more.
(Wow, matsutake mushrooms. Moreover, domestic matsutake mushrooms from the Reed Kingdom! And there are lots of them.)
Isaac smelled the Mushroom he just pulled out.
(Wow, it’s similar to the smell of instant soup! No, this isn’t the place to raise tension…)
A smell he had only experienced in the form of instant soup and furikake gohan.
(TL/N: ‘Furikake gohan’, basically rice with dry seasoning. Tastes great, there are some recipes showing you how you can make furikake seasoning at home. Tastes nice, looks nice.)
Its smell got him excited, but soon realized that he had never eaten these in his previous life, and his tension went down.
“What should we do? I brought the net, would you like to bake it and eat it here? Or do you want to take it back home?”
He got his hands on a fresh Matsutake mushroom.
By any means, he wanted to taste it in the unique atmosphere of the forest.
Although they had already eaten their lunch, Isaac decided to consume the Matsutake Mushrooms right inside the forest.
“Then I’ll make the foundation.”
One of the hunters began to fill the soil between trees in a slightly open space.
He made a clay pile shaped like “C” and put a net over it.
‘What kind of simple kamado is it?’
(TL/N: ‘Kamado’, a kind of Japanese stove, search it up as ‘Kamado stove’. They look quite aesthetic. Might’ve seen those in some old samurai movie or anime.)
Another hunter picked up dead branches from the surroundings.
Seeing that, two knights remained there as Isaac’s escorts, and the other three helped pick up the branches.
They were also experienced in picking up firewood from their outdoor exercises.
Besides, those who were not interested in Matsutake mushrooms wanted to finish everything as soon as possible.
They wanted Isaac to eat Matsutake mushrooms and be satisfied and return home quickly.
Therefore, they were taking the initiative in gathering firewood.
The hunters were quite skilled.
When the dead branches were gathered, they were folded into a size that would fit into the kamado, and then something like sawdust was taken out of the pouch hanging on the hunter’s waist.
It was to be used as an ignition agent.
Isaac was impressed by seeing the flint igniting something like sawdust.
(It may be faster than igniting it with just a lighter)
When he went camping with his friends in his previous life, he had a really hard time setting fire because he felt like “I’m okay if I have charcoal and a lighter”.
At that time, Watanabe, who loved camping, managed to light the fire with something that he had picked up locally. He was really sharp.
Because of the hard work, he felt like that barbecue was exceptionally delicious.
(He might be able to live well even if he was reborn as a farmer, after all, that one skill was so impressive.)
(TL/N: He’s talking about his camping enthusiast friend.)
Isaac was thinking about that while looking at the matsutake mushrooms that were sliced and now being baked.
However, that idea was immediately interrupted.
This is because the roasted matsutake mushrooms gave off the signature scent.
“The scent of matsutake mushrooms… Yeah, it smells delicious.”
A knight was surprised by Isaac’s words.
Isaac was surprised because that knight was surprised.
Both of their eyes intersected.
“Do you not like this smell?”
“Ah, no that’s not it…. I usually smell it.”
The knight seemed like he was holding himself from speaking too much.
The knight exchanged eyes with other knights.
However, the knight who was surprised at the beginning got looks saying, “You can say that”.
“It smells like stuffy underwear …”
He found it pretty hard to say, as Isaac was about to eat those mushrooms.
However, he had no choice but to answer when asked for an answer.
The hunter listened to the knight’s answer and chimed in.
“The smell is strong and the taste is not that good. This is only served if you want to eat something with some strong liquor. Or you eat this if you’re in the woods and have nothing to eat.”
“Is that so……”
Isaac received culture shock again.
When people around him said this, the matsutake mushrooms that he was looking forward to with such excitement seemed to be something of no value whatsoever.
“Well, I won’t know until I try it.”
“Right. I think it’s about time.”
The hunter took a matsutake mushroom that seemed to have been burnt on a skewer and presented it to Isaac.
When Isaac tried to take it, one of the knights took it first, from the side.
“Mushrooms are dangerous, many of them are poisonous as well, so I will taste them first.”
“Well, uh. That’s right. Please go ahead.”
He had forgotten that one absolute fact himself, but Isaac was the successor to the Marquis family.
He couldn’t eat the mushrooms that grew in the forest without a taster.
He was interrupted, but he had to be patient here.
The knight hesitated a little, but he took the plunge and bit into the Matsutake.
“Hey, are you okay?”
After he chewed it several times, he spat out the matsutake mushrooms.
Seeing that display, another knight presented him with a water bottle.
The knight then rinsed his mouth several times with water and reported to Isaac with a painful face.
“Isaac-sama. It may not be poisonous, but I think you should not eat it…”
“Is it that bad?”
“Yes. Every time I chewed, the smell got stronger and the scent that penetrated my nose was so unpleasant… It felt like someone had stuffed socks in my mouth after their midsummer march exercise.”
Isaac was worried after hearing so many things about the mushrooms.
The matsutake mushrooms that were baked had a nice scent.
However, it smelled like something really bad to the humans of this country.
Isaac’s current body belonged to a human of that very country.
He thought that he might get disappointed if he ate the mushrooms.
“No, I’m already here. I’ll try it.”
Isaac reached for the matsutake mushroom that the knight has in his hand.
He said he will eat.
As long as there was no poison, the knights had no right to stop him.
He handed Isaac the skewer.
(The smell is good.)
“Bring the matsutake mushrooms close to the face and smell it several times.”
Because Isaac had become accustomed to the seasonings of this world, he was worried about how he would feel if he put it in his mouth.
(Maybe it’d be better if I ate these with a good image in my head.)
“Oh~ those smell good. Can I have a go?”
A girl’s voice was unexpectedly heard from the vicinity.
Isaac, who was glaring at the Matsutake mushrooms, and the knights watching over the situation were startled.
Looking at the owner of the voice, it was a girl wearing linen clothes like a Jomon man.
(TL/N: I can’t describe this, please search it up yourself. It’s basically a different kind of caveman fashion.)
She had blonde hair tied in a ponytail, and by her features she looked…. fifteen?
Her most prominent feature were her long pointed ears.
(TL/N: Elves, they sound badass, you’ll see in the later chapters.)
[PR note: ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ it’s not an isekai without elves]
She carried a bow and hung her quiver on her waist.
“It’s an Elf!”
One of the knights screamed in terror.
In response to that voice, everyone pulled out their swords and stood between Isaac and the elf girl.
“Eh?! Eh?! Wait, wait a minute!”
The elf girl was upset.
They suddenly pointed their swords at her.
She couldn’t help being confused.
Surprised, she immediately tried to escape.
“Wait! Stop! Hey, put your swords down.”
Isaac stopped the knights.
They didn’t attack because of the order, but neither did they put their swords away.
“Elves are dangerous! Please run away. Fast.”, said a knight.
“It’s more dangerous if you do this. It might trigger a war! Put your sword down right now!”
This time, the order was delivered with a strong tone.
――It might trigger a war.
Hearing those words, he reluctantly put away his sword.
But he was not convinced yet.
“We haven’t interacted with the elves for 200 years. We might get killed. It’s dangerous, so please run away.”
The knight advised Isaac to escape.
This was a natural course of action for him.
However, Isaac did not accept it.
“It’s okay. There’s no need for that.”
Isaac pointed at the elf girl.
“She has a bow and arrow, and I’ve heard that elves can use powerful magic. If she wanted to attack, then she would be shooting from a distance rather than coming this close.”
Next, he pointed to the matsutake mushrooms.
“She asked me if she could have a go. She probably intended to eat matsutake mushrooms with me. She’s not hostile.”
And finally, he pointed to the hunter.
“Above all, they aren’t that afraid of her. They are locals. At least for the hunters, contact with elves is not uncommon. They should’ve been scared because if elves and humans meet, they kill each other. Their behaviour proves that it’s not the case here. ”
The knights gasped Isaac’s explanation.
While they were afraid and only tried to fight, Isaac was calmly judging the situation.
In a sense, they thought that Isaac was the most scary thing present there.
However, contact with the elf was not surprising to Isaac.
In games, manga, anime, etc., they were generally allies with humans.
Forget being scared, he instead thought, ‘Oh, I met a rare person. Lucky~~’.
That’s why he was so calm.
“It’s exactly as the little boy says. We sometimes meet elves in the woods.”
“We also exchange salt for game.”
(TL/N: ‘Game’ in simple terms ‘meat’)
[PR note: Game in this case usually refers to meat acquired by hunting]
The hunters guaranteed that Isaac’s words were correct.
The knights relaxed a little.
Seeing that, Isaac, feeling relieved, stroked his chest.
“Okay. If you harm her here, the elfs will retaliate. If that happens, it’s our people who will be hit the hardest. So, calm down.”
“It’s strange to be calm in this situation…”
One of the knights told Isaac.
Although he was a child and a bit naive, Isaac’s calmness seemed unusual.
“I’m afraid because I don’t know the other person. At least she was friendly to me. So, let’s start with a dialogue.”
“I’m sorry to have surprised you, sister. Why don’t we have a little talk while eating matsutake mushrooms together?”
Isaac called out to the girl who was pointing her bow at him while hiding behind a tree some distance away.
“What are you guys?”
While holding the bow and arrow in her hand, the girl slowly came out from behind the tree.
They suddenly pointed their swords at her.
She couldn’t help being wary.
“I’m Isaac, the son of Randolph, from the Marquis of Wellrod. In short, I am the grandson of the human boss who governs this area. So they were surprised to see an elf for the first time and took out their swords to protect me. I apologize on behalf of them. I’m so sorry”
Isaac bowed deeply.
The angle was exactly 90 degrees.
Sadly, it was an angle that he was accustomed to from his previous life.
Isaac couldn’t apologize alone.
The knights also apologized and bowed their heads.
Seeing their figures, her confusion was gone.
“It was bad that I suddenly called out to some people I didn’t even know. I’m sorry. I’m Bridget by the way.”
Bridget also lifted her arrow away from the bow.
“Do you usually come into contact with humans?”
Isaac asked Bridget.
If not, then she shouldn’t have been able to call them so easily.
“Occasionally. Sometimes lighting fires is too troublesome, so I just borrow fire from them.”
That was the impression Isaac got from her response.
Two hundred years ago, humans were at war against the elves and dwarves.
All of them started living in seclusion after the armistice agreement.
(TL/N: Armistice means truce.)
Other elves might also be in contact with humans.
However, Isaac wondered if it was a good idea to make contact with humans just because it was too troublesome to light a fire yourself.
For the time being, they gave up on the burnt matsutake mushrooms and decided to talk while baking new matsutake mushrooms.
“If you’re an elf, then why not light a fire with magic?”
The main human wizards were those who performed medical treatments in the church.
But Isaac didn’t get a chance to meet them as he was a healthy kid.
Isaac had a great opportunity in front of him, so he tried to get Bridget to show him some magic.
He used the mushrooms as a trigger.
“It’s easy to make charcoal, but it’s difficult to slowly cook anything at a low temperature.”
“Magic is…. difficult, even for elves.”
Did Isaac’s word hurt her pride?
“Each person has different fields of expertise. I’m good with water and soil, but I’m not good at fire.”
(TL/N: ‘Soil’ magic MIGHT later change to ‘earth’ magic.)
[PR note: earth does have a bit of a better ring to it]
“I can’t do anything. Just because I can use magic …”
There, Isaac came up with one idea.
(You can use magic. You can do things that I can’t normally do.)
While Bridget was speaking, Isaac was creepily looking at Bridget.
“Hey, Ms. Bridget. Can you turn the earth into stone?”
“I can do that. It’s normal to make a wall of a house out of soil and magically turn it into a stone.”
Bridget’s answer shook Isaac.
It’s neither fear nor cold.
His body was shaking from delight.
“Well then, can you make a stone like this? For the time being, the thickness will be about 1cm, and make it as flat as possible.”
Isaac drew a 10 cm square on the ground.
“I don’t mind …”
Bridget mysteriously overlapped her hands.
“[On. Kakabi. Sanma. Ai. Sowaka].”
When Bridget uttered those words, a square board that seemed to be made of compact soil was completed in a blink of an eye.
Isaac held the board in his hand and tapped it.
Although it was made of soil, it seemed to be quite solid.
“Ms. Bridget. What was that magic you used?”
“Huhu~ It’s a spell that works on the earth. Are you satisfied with that?”
Looking at Isaac’s surprised face, Bridget puffed up her modest chest.
However, Isaac was not surprised by the magic and its effects.
He was surprised at the spell.
(It’s like that thing that the priest was chanting… I’m not confident)
(TL/N: TBH I don’t exactly know which priest he’s talking about. But I remember these kinds of chants from the manga ‘Twin star exorcists’ they sound cool. It’s probably something from shintoism or buddhism.)
Isaac was surprised at the spell he had once heard on TV.
He thought she would use normal magic more like “[Fire]” or “[Earthquake]”.
(Isn’t this destroying the image of fantasy?)
Was it set in the game?
Or was it something new, independent from the settings?
However, he was a little dissatisfied.
“Hey, can you give it a try? See if it breaks or not.”
Pulling himself back to reality, Isaac handed the board to one of the knights.
“Leave it to me”
The knight put the board on the ground and stomped on it with his heels.
However, it did not break.
There was no choice but to try to strike it with a knife, but it didn’t break; only some scratches appeared on it.
The board was really strong.
“Ms. Bridget. Depth 1m, width 10m. With these dimensions, how long of a board can you make?”
“Hmm, maybe 100 steps”
“Well… 100 steps. Is that something you can do everyday?”
Bridget’s answer was satisfactory.
(Even if it is 100m, 1km if there are 10 elves. 100km in 100 days. This is big news.)
(TL/N: Apparently 1 step is the same as 1m.)
Isaac’s thoughts, “Bridget is cute” and “first contact with an elf” were now gone from his head.
Now his head was full of “NEXCO Wellrod”.
(TL/N: The Central Nippon Expressway Company Limited, abbreviated as NEXCO Central, is one of the main operators of expressways and toll roads in Japan, basically money. Am really sorry for so many notes.)
Even if they don’t become allies, if they worked as migrant workers to improve the road, Isaac would be able to gain a lot of influence and power.
“I heard that you were exchanging salt with hunters. Is there anything else the elves want?”
It only creates hostility if it’s a one-sided request for cooperation.
First, give what the other party wants.
–Gather information for that.
“I wonder. We used to trade salt with dwarves, but since they live far away, we’ve been exchanging it with humans for about 100 years. After all, it’s easier to exchange it with people who are nearby.”
“I see, I see”
Many things could be read from the current information.
Among them, bartering with local people for 100 years was a big harvest.
It was not possible to trade with humans who were alive at the time of the war 200 years ago.
However, if you are not a person who fought directly, you would be more likely to compromise and deal with them.
In other words, Isaac also had room for negotiations.
He doesn’t know how much reward they’d need, but he has some money.
He could pay the price.
The idea of making aristocrats his allies through infrastructure development could become a reality.
(In that case, next year… is no good)
He wanted to negotiate after the new year, but next year his grandfather would stay in the royal capital as the Foreign Minister.
If it was important to trade with different races, it would be necessary to have his grandfather, the official lord, visit them rather than Isaac’s father, the acting lord.
(……Would that be alright?)
Isaac became anxious.
He was allowed to go to Tilly Hill, but will he be able to allow trade with the elfs?
However, Isaac shook off his anxiety.
He wouldn’t know until he tried everything.
Besides, the result could only be known after proceeding with the plan.
“Ms. Bridget. Can you ask the elf representative if they can discuss resuming interaction with humans? In 10-14 days?”
“Well, that’s fine, but… I don’t think the other humans would agree to meet them…”
Was this the general understanding?
Bridget looked a bit anxious.
“I am prepared for that. If it doesn’t work out, I will send the messenger to the forest saying that it has been canceled.”
Isaac sincerely said.
There is a big difference between having the cooperation of the elves and not having it.
He was desperate because his life was hanging on this.
That thought was conveyed to Bridget.
“I understand, but it won’t be easy.”
“I understand, thank you.”
Bridget reached out to Isaac with a smile.
Isaac clasped her hand.
“No. Please give me some salt to sprinkle on the matsutake mushrooms.”
“Ah, yes they’re over there!”
The matsutake mushrooms were charred nicely before they knew it.
Isaac was also handed a skewer with matsutake mushrooms, which made him feel a bit uncomfortable.
The first skewer was dropped on the ground, so this was his first experience of matsutake mushrooms.
(Breathe in, let it cool a little bit and bite.)
Except for the scent, the mushroom itself tasted like an ordinary mushroom.
He was disappointed because he had really high expectations.
“Scented Matsutake that tastes like shimeji mushrooms.”
Bridget was eating it with salt while enjoying the scent.
Isaac also imitated her and sprinkled it with salt, but the feeling of disappointment didn’t go away.
(Someone give me soy sauce.)
“The instant soup still tastes better.”
“These Matsutake mushrooms are disappointing.”
Isaac had no choice but to hope that his interaction with the little elf could at least bear some fruits.
