Tensei Kizoku wa Taishi wo Idaku! - chapter 25:Five-year-old, Tilly Hill bids.
chapter 25:Five-year-old, Tilly Hill bids.
A mining city located four days away from the territory of Wellrod, via a horse carriage
Because it was located in a hilly area, it was not possible to get there straight from the Wellrod territory.
‘–Head to Tilly Hill via the commercial city ‘Tailor’ located northeast of the Wellrod territory’.
The journey was a series of hardships for Isaac.
Involuntarily, he agreed with his mother and grandmother that the journey was too much for a child like him.
The road from the commercial city, Tailor to Tilly Hill was especially terrible.
It was incomparable to the road to the royal capital, which was in good condition for the time being.
After all, it was nothing nearly resembling the main road.
The most painful thing was that all the servants and the caretakers were men.
If there was a young maid like Sherry, Isaac could hug her by saying “to withstand the shaking of the carriage”, but he didn’t want to do that with a man.
It was possible that a rumor like, “Isaac likes women even though he’s a child” might start, so it was hard for Isaac to ask whether he could take a few maids with him.
The only thing he enjoyed along the way was the new scenery he saw.
(Even so, this is troublesome…)
Isaac looked out of the carriage.
He had ten fully armed knights, twenty infantry, and twenty archers.
He had a total of fifty escorts.
He could win any little skirmish if he wanted to.
In addition, three people were attached as caretakers.
Isaac also said, “I don’t really need so many people”, but Morgan didn’t budge.
Although it might be a problem if Isaac got attacked on the way, Isaac was also the second successor to the Marquis of Wellrod.
(TL/N: The first is Randolph, as he’s still a deputy and hasn’t completely taken over yet.)
Moreover, he is a legitimate successor to Randolph.
If he goes somewhere, he must go out with a decent escort.
He also needed to keep his appearance as an aristocrat.
(Even though I can’t earn the salary of this escort…)
Iron ore would be sold to the companies, but the initial price would be low.
So everything would be quite awkward till the next bid.
(It’s okay. You’re a merchant, if you see profit, you’ll bite…. right?)
Isaac was worried when he arrived there, but he could no longer turn back.
Because he decided to live a life different from the previous life, there was no longer an option to ‘not challenge’.
In his previous life, even if there was a girl he was interested in, he wouldn’t have called her out.
Because he was such a person.
But not anymore.
It was decided to rent a room inside the mansion of ‘Baron Algren’, the representative of Tilly Hill, and use that place to bid.
Baron Algren, the head Kenneth and his family.
A secretary apprentice named Glen, who came with Isaac as a caretaker, was also present.
A knight stood in the corner of the room just in case.
” First of all, Everyone has come all the way here. Thank you for that.”
Isaac thanked the three representatives of the companies.
They are the “people who responded to Isaac’s call for a large-scale, reasonably priced company” selected by Isaac.
There were other companies of the same scale, but they refused the invitation under judgements such as “I don’t need iron ore even with the invitation of the young master” or “If I want to take someone’s side then it’d be Master Nathan.”
It was not a strange thing that many refused.
Isaac had troublesome conditions for participation.
――The person attending should be an important person who can make decisions for the company.
This was a condition that was given out of Isaac’s kindness, but the companies did not take it as such.
The benefits of the deal weren’t revealed yet.
Many merchants thought that “Isaac just wanted to keep his face”.
It was certainly important to get an advantage using flattery, but it was not necessary for the disadvantageous side in a battle for succession.
In that case, it was much better to just devote yourself to your main business without wasting time on some childish skirmish like that.
‘People who could make an important decision’ didn’t feel the need to go out because it was unnecessary for business.
The people who took Isaac’s invitation this time were those who did not make such natural judgements.
It was natural to have contact with Nathan, as he had an advantage afterall.
However, the returns were moderate for each company.
So, the companies with a strong spirit, who wanted a one-shot reversal in the market, wanted to invest in Isaac.
The participating companies were all from different fields.
Henry, the leader, was in attendance from the ‘White Company’, which mainly handled groceries.
Because of the strong power of the Black Company inside the Wellrod territory, this was a company that imported food products from the neighboring agricultural country of Fertil.
(TL/N: I don’t know if the author actually means to name the companies with slightly different spelling of colours, I’ll just go with the actual spelling. Please note that the name might change in the future.)
If investing in Isaac was even remotely worth it, then they’d take the shot and aim to become the number one food trader in the whole territory.
(TL/N: Here ‘the leader’ I don’t honestly know what the real world equivalent would be, but it’s something like a manager.)
Ian, the leader, was also in attendance from the ‘Grey company’, which mainly handled iron products.
Originally, Black Company handled woodwork products, but it had been 100 years since they began their business.
They were trying to monopolize many of the fields, and in recent years they started showing interest in blacksmithing as well, and due to that fact, the Grey Company was under a crisis.
They responded to Isaac’s call because they thought it might trigger something.
Chairman Jacob was present from the ‘Red Color Company’, which handled ornaments.
The Red Color company was the company under the most distress due to Black company.
The wife of the current chairman, Dennis, was the daughter of a trading company from the royal capital, which even sold ornaments to the royal family.
She used her connections to order merchandise and thus, the Black company began handling ornaments as well.
He was hoping that Isaac would be a hit, and so, participated in a mood to gamble with the competing companies.
“And thank you, Baron Algren, for lending me this place.”
Thank you to the person who’s mansion would be rented from now on.
Saying thank you came free of cost.
Isaac would say as many ‘thank yous’ as he could if that alone improved his public image, even by a bit.
“No, I should thank you. There isn’t much entertainment in the countryside anyway.”
With that said, Kenneth laughed which added more wrinkles to his wrinkled face.
Although there were mines, its produce wasn’t enough to meet the needs of the Wellrod territory.
This town existed for maintenance of the mining technology and as an insurance in-case something happened in the mine of Marquis of Warwick.
Because it was far from the main trade routes, people like street performers or anything else rarely came to Tilly Hill.
It was a good spectacle for Isaac to visit and do something in this way.
However, Isaac was sitting there, wondering how his family would like to visit this place.
“Then, let’s move on. I would like everyone who came to buy 100 kg of iron ore. We will decide who to sell to by competitive bidding, not by buying and selling at the market price.”
Glen sitting next to Isaac heaved a small sigh.
Even though the other people didn’t notice, Glen sure did.
‘――A request for a blatant bribe’.
It was common to keep the difference in your pocket by making people buy cheap things at a high price.
“We’re going to do it ten times in total. Those who make a successful bid will have great benefits. I hope you will do your best.”
Isaac spoke with a childish smile, and the other smiled in return as well.
‘Even if he’s a bit weird, he can’t be that stupid right?’, was what the attending representatives thought.
The other party in question was the grandson of the lord.
Given their future relationship with the Wellrod family, they couldn’t handle the situation rudely.
The knights carried a tsuitate and placed it between them.
(TL/N: ‘Tsuitate’, a screen like a vertical board, you can say it’s a smaller, more badass version of those curtains that separate a room, they mostly appear in old japanese samurai movies or anime where an important person talks from behind the screen.)
This was to keep all of their biddings a secret.
There, the merchants wrote down the bid amount.
Jacob scribbled on the paper with a face full of despair.
He didn’t think he’d have a chance to break through their current situation.
Isaac carefully checked the collected paper so that nothing written on it could be seen.
Disappointment was plastered on his face.
(300,000, 500,000, 1.21 million … So only the White Company is motivated?)
If you think of it as iron ore whose original price was less than 100,000 leads, everyone probably gave a reasonable price.
Henry of White company gave the highest price.
1.21 million leads.
1.1 million as a precaution of someone writing 1 million.
‥ …… In anticipation of that, 1.2 million.
In addition, the bid could be assured at 1.2 million with an additional 10,000.
It meant that he responded seriously to the bid.
He made a good impression from the very start.
“This time it was a successful bid for White Company. Congratulations.”
Isaac congratulated him with a smile.
Henry may have thought it was stupid, but he also replied with a smile.
For the time being, they heard applause from the surrounding people.
“Then, you made a successful bid, so I will give you 1 point first.”
Hearing Isaac’s words, Glenn wrote “1 successful bid for the White Company” on his paper.
Although he thought that all of it was ridiculous, it was still his job.
Glen never cut corners.
“Depending on how many other companies can win the bid, if you accumulate 4 points or more, you will win. For example, if the number of successful bids is 5 times: 2 times: 2 times, the bid will end at the 9th time. ”
This is the answer derived from “doing it ten times”.
If it was clear which company would win then the bidding would stop right there.
However, the whole place was somber.
There was an air of “I don’t care”, over the other two parties.
“The company with the highest number of successful bids will become the merchant serving directly under me when I become the lord, so do your best.”
The dull air was gone.
It was natural, as Isaac changed the situation from “children’s pocket money” to “competition for the merchants directly under his command” all at once.
“I never heard anything about that. Why didn’t you tell me earlier!?”
“That’s right. If I knew that, I would have bid a higher price.”
The Grey Company and Red Color Company , who could not make a successful bid, protested.
Although it was only the first round, taking the lead from the beginning had a lot of advantages.
However, the protest wasn’t justified.
Isaac’s smile was gone, and with a grim expression, he turned and hit the desk with his child sized fist.
It didn’t make much of a sound, but the display was enough to make them nervous and quiet.
“I said that the winning bidder would get a privilege. If you thought this was child’s play then it’s your responsibility, your mistake that you kept the price down, right?”
His attitude changed suddenly, and the two who were blaming Isaac moments earlier quickly turned their gaze away from Isaac.
It was exactly as Isaac said.
It was very awkward that Isaac had noticed everything.
He was still a child.
It was even more scary because he noticed it but didn’t say anything in return.
Isaac glanced at them and then returned to his default smile.
“Well, Mr. Henry of the White Company. You thought about various things while making the bid. As the first successful bidder, I will allow you to introduce one rule.”
Even if he was asked to decide the rules, he couldn’t think of anything.
Isaac expected this reaction, so he gave him some references.
“That’s right. Including this time, you can decide if we should reveal all of the bids. OR whether we keep the winning bid a secret and reveal the rest of them.”
There was a big difference in whether or not the winning bid was revealed.
Such a rule would greatly affect the future bids.
The decision-making power was given to Henry, the first successful bidder.
“Isn’t it good to just go home and make the rule during the next bidding?”
Naturally, Isaac shook his head.
“No. That puts the other companies at a significant disadvantage. They won’t know what the rules will be until next month. It makes no sense if we did that.”
Henry put his hand on his chin and pondered.
Occasionally, he looked at the other two.
He wondered how he could get an advantage.
After a while, it seemed that the answer came out.
“The highest bidder’s amount is not disclosed. Please note that other bid amounts are disclosed.”
In the end, as Isaac said, he chose to hide the highest bidder’s bid.
He had the advantage of knowing the winning bid because he was the winning bidder.
That rule would give him a lot of advantage in the next round.
And this was the rule Isaac wanted.
As long as the others didn’t know the winning bid, they’ll put in a lot of money to make sure that they win.
He was casually inducing his thoughts by pretending to help in order to get the rule he wanted.
“Then, here are the bid amounts.”
Isaac showed them a form with the bid amounts written on it.
500,000 for Grey Company and 300,000 for Red Color Company.
After checking the written amounts, Jacob looked uneasy, saying, “The bids aren’t that low, aren’t you being too strict?”
“Even if you don’t become the winner, I’ll never forget to consider you later, just because you participated in my bidding. So don’t give up. There are other rules here too…. ”
Isaac conveyed the rules he had decided.
-First, you should bring the money to win the bid all the way to Tilly Hill.
-Second, participants are prohibited from directly or indirectly interfering with other companies coming to Tilly Hill.
-Third, members of the Wellrod family other than Isaac, shouldn’t be contacted, especially Morgan and Randolph.
This was to prevent the leakage of the winning bid amount and other such frauds.
“These are the principles, and depending on the situation, we will penalize those who seem to overstep the limit. What if you bid with money without thinking about anything, etc. ”
“How would you judge them for something like collusion?”
Ian asked Isaac about something he was very afraid of.
“It doesn’t matter. Please feel free. The merchant with the most successful bids will win. Even if they start rigging and holding down the bid amounts, then they’ll keep accumulating money for the last round, in the meantime you can bet in the middle and win the competition.”
“Oh, I see.”
Ian wiped the cold sweat on his forehead.
No, it wasn’t just Ian.
Most of the people present at this place were so nervous that they had started sweating and even swallowed their spit in anticipation.
As they heard from the rumors, Isaac was not just a child.
On the contrary, it seemed that the soul of Jude, the predecessor of the lord, had been transferred into Isaac.
Randolph and the other adults had known Isaac since he was born, so his impact on them was small, but Isaac was really unsettling and creepy for anyone unfamiliar with him.
It was the same as that mysterious monster, a 5-year-old child who could talk in a coherent adult-like manner so far.
The air of disappointment was long gone.
Now the only thing that remained was the awe of, “the reincarnation of Jude has appeared”.
“Do you have any other questions?”
“When will we be your merchants?”
Jacob asked a question.
This was the most important thing for him.
Of course, it was also something the other’s couldn’t ignore
“When will it be? It will probably take about 20 years before I am appointed as the acting lord, so I thought that you could become a merchant right after that, so I made this scenario. To be honest you should’ve avoided it. ”
Jacob made a quick calculation while thanking him for the answer.
In the next 20 years, the Red Color Company would be able to take control of the trade.
In the meantime, they needed to endure the war with the black company.
It was not a battle they needed to win, they just needed to endure for 20 years. That, they could somehow manage.
If you could become a merchant for the Wellrods, then it was worth it.
“Is there anything else? Of course, we will accept questions from the next time onwards, so it’s not a rush.”
“I have one important question. What if Master Isaac is unable to become the successor?”
Henry’s question was of equal importance for the other two.
It was the most important question as well as the most difficult question to ask
However, Isaac answered as if it was another trivial question.
“This is a fundraiser for that. My destiny depends on how much money is raised. It can be said that this is a risky gamble, that’s why the reward is so big. For the winning company that is.”
“I won’t lose.”
Baron Algren was the one who responded the most to Isaac’s words.
He never expected that he would hear a statement in his mansion like that from the successor of the Wellrod family.
He came to this town to bid on iron ore, he didn’t think it was something that important.
He gasped, “I sure witnessed a difficult scene…”.
And those around him also noticed.
――Why was it in a bidding format?
If you wanted to invest, then there was no need for something so troublesome.
The reason for taking the troublesome means of bidding for iron ore.
――It was to identify the merchant.
In the future, he was looking for a reliable person for help during the battle for succession
That’s why he was calling out to the prominent companies and letting them compete. It was to determine their abilities.
It did not mean “I want money, so please invest”.
It was, “I’ll determine if you’re right for me” then “I’ll let you invest”.
The merchants were also surprised at this.
Of course, this wasn’t bad.
It meant that they were being tested.
They had never seen a child testing other merchants.
All of it made them feel like he was really serious about winning the inheritance.
However, Isaac was not using the bidding format to find a reliable merchant.
From next year, he’d casually invite Black company and sow seeds to get it to spit out all of its property.
(Although it’s absolutely necessary, I will just sow the seeds. If I sow the seeds, I want to sow seeds in the woman…. What? NO! No, why are you thinking about stupid things at a time like this?)
(TL/N: The above line was basically a pun on ‘sowing seeds’ where he indicated his desire to ‘sow seeds’ in a woman. I don’t think puns like these translate well to english.)
[PR note: you know the rules and so do I ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)]
Isaac flashed a self-deprecating smile.
Seeing that smile, the people present there thought that Isaac was saying, “Now, entertain me with your abilities” in a mocking tone.
