“If you think nothing will happen while you sit down doing nothing――should we choose the next Emperor by having the citizens vote?” ~Sugen
Inside the Emperor’s audience room…
We knelt as we faced our father, the Emperor, and proposed this move.
I recited the speeches which I had prepared in my mind and spoke to the Emperor.
“The Emperor rules over the people. However, we do not have a tremendous cohesive power like Your Majesty. If this goes on, no matter who becomes the Emperor, the people’s heart will be separated and the country will soon face destruction.” ~ Sugen
“Even so, is there any relation to voting?” ~ Emperor
“It has very related. Whoever ascends the throne will be inferior to Your Majesty, but he/she will have retained the people’s trust and follow him if he is the Emperor they chose.” ~ Sugen
The voting system is suggested to make up for the lack of cohesive power. In this case, the the proposal to revoke the Emperor’s nomination right will worsen.
That was what I thought, however……
“The point is, you guys want to ensure that Gettenwo, who had the most popularity to ascend the throne?” ~Emperor
“It’s exactly that.” ~ Gettenwo
To answer the Emperor’s keen finding, Gettenwo was the first to confess.
“Hey, Gettenwo! We especially worked on this clever plan, but what’s with the sudden confession!” ~Sugen
“Your true feelings are too transparent! This kind of tricks can’t even fool the children.” ~Gettenwo
At Gettenwo’s betrayal, I quickly flung off the cat I had put on my head.
“That’s right. What’s bad about it? Father…… we suspected that you were going to remove Gettenwo’s name from the candidacy!” ~Sugen
“I won’t remove her. If we evaluate fairly and think that it is appropriate, Gettenwo will be nominated as the next Emperor.” ~Emperor
The Emperor spoke without being agitated of the current situation. It does not seem like he was lying about the situation but, it looks like this father was good at telling lies. The other day, he hit a person while pretending to be straight-laced and he alone destroyed the opium smuggling organization alone which had a criminal records.
“Moreover, can’t you see that Gettenwo is dissatisfied with the fairness of the nomination?” ~Emperor
“Am I? In the begining, I have no plan to be a prince nor do I want to become the Emperor. Just like I said during the opium case, as the Emperor, for the sake of the whole situation, you will have to possess a capacious mind, right? I’m not good with such things. It’s much easier for me to expose bad guys.” ~Gettenwo
Until now, the identity of Gettenwo had not yet been revealed to the public.
Or rather, on the surface, the court treated the situation as ‘the recognized fifth prince, Gettenwo, has not yet responded.’ For the imperial court, this was a top-secret matter.
Once she officially became a prince, she would no longer be able to steal. Perhaps, she was not comfortable of that matter.
“But Gettenwo, if you become a prince, you can buy everything you want and eat all the delicious food you can without stealing. Why are you fixated to be a chivalrous thief?” ~Sugen
“No… Actually, I only recently began as a chivalrous thief. Until then, I was just a petty thief. At least, until I have atone――That is none of your business.” ~Gettenwo
Gettenwo’s thoughts spilled out. It looked like it was not purely chivalrous spirit.
Iifu who was impatient of the current situation, stood up while brushing his knees.
“Hey, dad. In the end, the voting is still going to be rejected? Geez, this is boring. I withdraw!” ~Iifu
“I have wasted my time…” ~Sugen
Nonetheless, the tipping one’s hand strategy failed. Since this had happened, as expected, we have to expose our shameful behaviour to raise Gettenwo’s worth.
The Emperor muttered casually as he shamelessly thought about his steady endeavour from hereafter.
“No. Just because I simply could not stomach your shameful atitude, I don’t think that the voting system itself is bad. As you said, it might be useful to gain support from the people.” ~Emperor
I, Iifu, and Sauran looked at the Emperor at the same time. Only Ryausha remained calm.
“Look, didn’t I say that? Father did not want to exclude Gettenwo. So voting is alright, as I have guessed.” ~Ryausha
Ryausha proudly spoke as she watched Gettenwo and me alternately. Actually, while designing this strategy, Ryausha was optimistic that it will succeed.
The Emperor looked at Ryausha.
“Really, is that what you think too?” ~ Emperor
“Apart from these other fools, huh? It is best to settle things peacefully and see. If you like, you can cooperate with me?” ~Ryausha
“Hmm… As expected, still inexperienced.” ~Emperor
Ryausha’s eyes widened.
“Certainly, it is a plausible plan for the moment. However, at the end it is just one of the options. There is a possibility to overturn things after this. For you to brag immediately is a bad habit, Ryausha. Remember that you are still a candidate for the throne.” ~Emperor
I’m not sure, but it seemed that there was an intense exchange between my father and sister. My older sister, who had a calm expression that I hated, curved her lips.
In contrast, the Emperor who was calm and composed, rested her chin on his hand and on the throne’s armrest.
“Well….. then, it will be a voting system. I cannot reject that method. However, in this situation, it is hard to say that it is fair. Only Gettenwo, who was active around the castle town will be at an advantage.” ~Emperor
“Then, I guess it will be rejected?” ~Sugen
“Listen to what I have to say until the end.” ~Emperor
The Emperor opposed my words with a stunned face.
“I’m just saying that it is unfair in this situation. In the future, should your temperament and abilities be known to the people, then we may consider the vote.” ~Emperor
“Apart from their ability, wouldn’t it be a bad thing to vote once these guys temperament were known?” ~Gettenwo
Gettenwo interjected accurately, but,
“It doesn’t matter. If they were known and they still lose, that means, they have the ability to escape.” ~Emperor
The Emperor was calm to the end.
Once we received the news, my elder siblings suddenly started to liven up.
“You said it, right, dad…? Once a man has spoken, he cannot withdraw his words…” ~Iifu
“Yes, the more they know our personality, it is impossible for us to win.” ~Ryausha
“Seriously, you underestimate our intorelerant.” ~Sauran
My siblings spoke up with pride, but I sensed an impending crisis.
If we’re going to do the voting system, Gettenwo, who had a record as a chivalrous thief, would ranked on the first place, and perhaps, I will be on the second place.
My elder brothers, with their non-existent human charm, will definitely be defeated.
However, it was just like the Emperor had said. Even if they know of our temperament and ability, with someone who was full of charm like me, I cannot ignore the possibility that there will be a reversal and i will jump to the top of the list with my popularity――
“I should say in advance, as soon as you look at them, they look like they’re in a gang.” ~Gettenwo
And, as if she could sense my worry, Gettenwo slapped my ass.
“Gettenwo…… Is that so? Yes, that’s right. An ordinary person would not understand my exvellent talent.” ~Sugen
“Oh, sure.” ~Gettenwo
Somehow, Gettenwo answered in monotone.
The Emperor turned his gaze towards Gettenwo.
“The fifth prince. Do you have any objection to this election method?” ~Emperor
“Do I have the right to speak?” ~Gettenwo
“Naturally, because you are an officially recognized prince.” ~Emperor
Hmm… Gettenwo put her fist on her chin.
“Your Majesty. You may nominate or vote. The point is, do you intend to put the most appropriate person as the next Emperor?” ~Gettenwo
“Then, I am not worried. After all, I am just a bait.” ~Gettenwo
Gettenwo waved her hand.
Even now, Gettenwo herself did not believe that she is a successor to the throne. Even with voting, the emperor can alter with the result.
This is convenient. I have to take advantage of her carelessness well.
The Emperor groaned with satisfaction and looked at us.
“It’s settled. Then, let’s consider the voting system. Consequently, you guys too should do a suitable work.” ~Emperor
The Emperor nodded to answer the siblings’ question.
“It’s just some simple thing. The first step is to get the subjects to know you. Each prince will give a public speech.” ~Emperor
All of their eyes except Gettenwo’s sparkled with an understanding.
Translator and Editor Notes:
Oh…boi. You all are gonna love the speeches. The princes are pretty smart and stupid at the same time. What do you think? 😂 ~ Asada
