Adopting Disaster - Chapter 5: Learning Magic
Chapter 5: Learning Magic
“I want to learn.”
Her words were full of longing. Her expression was that of a little magical girl full of enthusiasm.
“Then shall we learn?”
He wanted to teach her magic but the main purpose was to teach magic to himself first.
It would be nonsense if the Tower Lord couldn’t use magic.
It’s a similar level of nonsense to a farmer who doesn’t know how to farm, a knight without any honor or a king who has no army and territory.
“The status window is there with everything but there is no magic spell window.”
[Seven Disasters] must have such a skills window but in reality there was no such window where you can just register a shortcut key to activate the spell.
And even if he did have the window, he had virtually zero experience with it.
‘If I had known this was gonna happen then I would have trained hard with a Wizard Character.’
The wizard character was difficult to nurture and they didn’t stand out much compared to the others so I only used it like once out of five times.
Reed gently lowered his head
Her expression was full of desire for knowledge just when she first saw the encyclopedia.
Reed began to search the library with Rosaria who was chasing after him.
For a Wizard, his library was important. It’s the place which contains all the information about a person. Just like how a Wizard covers his body with a robe to hide his secrets, only the Master can enter the library and outsiders are virtually forbidden.
This place was cut off from the outside so it was easy to let go of the authoritarian demeanor. This place could be said to be the perfect place to educate Rosaria.
The concern of not finding the things which he was looking for disappeared after a while.
After searching the library, the size of a National library, he finally found it.
It was a book with hand marks which couldn’t be removed even with magic.
Reed pulled out the book and read the title.
[Understanding Basic Magic]
At the corner, the name of the author was written on it, Reed Adelheights.
‘There are countless traces of heavy research.’
There were colorfully pasted labels.
[Easy and Quick Guide to Elemental Affinity]
[Introduction to Elements]
The lower labels made him feel dizzy by just looking at them.
‘I am sure this is the only basic magic book here.’
In some remote parts of his memory, there were traces of this book in Reed’s study.
He sincerely thanked the original Reed and opened the book.
This text book will only be used for the basic education that belongs to the simple libera arts course. This is a book whose content will be familiar to all people who practise magic. In the Cloud continent, 20% of the atmosphere is made up of Mana and depending upon how we draw and use this manga, we…….
From the very start you are welcomed with contents which seem as if containing sleep magic and things which are hard to remember, learn or concentrate on.
‘I never thought that I would meet again with the book from my major after university…’
I never imagined that we would be meeting again like this.
‘Is it a magic book?’
Reed nodded at Rosaria’s question.
“Yeah, but I think Dad should probably read this first. Can you wait a little bit?”
Rosaria continued reading the book which she had been reading.
Reed also began reading his book slowly.
Reading through tedious chunks of text mixed with an alien language, Reed figured out one thing.
How hardworking was Reed’s character. His handwriting and some incomprehensible parts but all those were explained properly later on.
Each page was decorated with great care. His piled up despair must have been very deep.
After two hours of reading, Reed was able to figure out how to manifest mana.
It was a difficult book but he was able to get the feel by following the trails left by Reed who had worked on the book.
‘Lets try it.’
Reed closed the book.
The way Mages feel mana is quite tricky. The best was through your own heartbeat.
‘I feel my heart beating.’
Reed closed his eyes and shut his mouth. He concentrated all his senses on his heart and ears.
The soft pounding of flesh. The sound of his heart which seems to be reverating from afar pounded his eardrums.
‘Try breathing according to the sound.’
Moments later, Reed felt something spinning in his body.
The moment the man in his body began to move, he could feel it circulating through his whole body for a while even if he opened his eyes and released his consciousness.
The body is like the sea and the mana is thousands of the fishes swimming in it. It’s free but subject to the control of consciousness.
Reed moved it as he wished, like the swarm of carp flocking to the shore of a lake fascinated by a prey.
‘It’s not usually described to feel this free…….’
The moment he feels the man in his body is [Mana Sense Level 1] and when he starts to control the mana circulation in his body, it corresponds to to [Mana Sense Level 2].
Reed was at Level 1 and was in the process towards the second step.
The reason Reed was able to do it so skillfully was undoubtedly because his [Magic] and [Mana Sense] both have already reached Level 4.
Considering Reed’s frustration, he tried it a couple of times, thinking it might fail.
He got to the second step very easily.
Reed focused on the sensation in his hand. Hundreds of millions of fishes swimming and gathering at his hand.
“Spit it out.”
Release. Blue mana gushed out from his hands like a beam about to burst out but it did not.
The released mana was concentrated around his hands once again. It happened very naturally, just like when one counts from 1 to 10.
The scattered mana in the air started being attracted towards his hands. Reed wraps the mana by his hands as if holding an invisible ball.
At the centre, Blue mana swirled and began to swirl and clump together in the form of a sphere.
It was of the same size as a baseball and was spinning very fast. It was wonderful and beautiful.
Feeling the limits of his powers, Reed stopped concentrating and the gathered mana was scattered all over the room.
The chandelier light flicked for a moment due to the movement of the mana.
Reed placed his hand on his chest.
His heart was racing and bones protesting.
It was such a difficult moment that he would have fainted if he had not been that focused.
‘This is the limit of what a person with [Mana Sense Level 4] can do.’
Level 1 senses the mana in the body.
Level 2 controls the mana in his body.
Level 3 emits the mana outside of his body.
Level 4 Control the released mana
And finally at Level 5, the released mana can be reabsorbed back into the body.
Reed is stuck at Level 4 and hence he can create a sphere but cannot absorb it back to his body.
Reed checked out his remaining mana.
‘The sphere consumed 1000 mana.’
Among the non-attributed magic, the most basic magic spell is [Mana Arrow] which consumes 50 mana.
The sphere which Reed had just created was an object that consumed twenty times the mana.
‘It must have been quite dangerous.’
Even though it was just pure mana, if it exploded rather than scattering then not only Reed but Rosaria would have been in danger as well.
Reed turned his head slightly to look at Rosaria.
Contrary to what he was concerned about, Rosaria’s expression was bright.
Rosaria opened her mouth wide and let out a series of exclamations. It’s an expression which Reed can sympathise with.
‘She is dying of wonder right?’
Something popped in his hand, circulated and then disappeared. This would definitely seem like magic according to his world standards.
He looked at Rosaria and then asked.
“Do you know what I was doing?”
Rosaria answered with a bright expression.
“One of the basics of magic is to sense mana. If you can’t do this then you cant be called a Magician.”
“Can I try?”
Hearing that, Reed trembled. Did she mean that she understood it just by seeing it once?
Reed looked forward to it.
Rosaria got up from her seat and followed Reed’s previous posture.
She inflated her cheeks like a ball. She gave full strength to her joints and tried her hardest to make the ball but the mana sphere did not form as the case with Reed.
‘It can’t be…’
Rosaria’s characteristics have still not been unlocked.
No matter how much of genis she is in learning a language, it is still difficult to radiate mana.
“It doesn’t work like that.”
“It may still be difficult for Rosaria.”
“Boooo. I want to make balls to……”
Her inflated cheeks shrink with a sign of weakness.
“Rosaria will be able to make balls someday. Until then let’s study hard, okay?”
“Yes! Studying is fun!”
“What a cute thing.”
He smiled thinking if this is what the parents and teachers feel seeing their enthusiastic students.
Someone poked in her head after knocking on the door.
“I am here, Tower Lord.”
Her expression was strangely tired and had a saggy tone.
It must have been because of the management of the Tower and attention by the other Tower Lords.
Reed asked her calmly, pretending to not notice her expression.
“What did you come here for?”
“The mana of the tower is very distrubed so we have to build the Mana Pillars.”
“Mana Pillars of the Tower?”
“Yeah…..To measure the abilities of the Wizards at the tower. They all went to erect Mana Pillars. I came to ask just in case if you are interested.
Erecting Mana Pillars?
He couldn’t understand what it meant. As the Tower Lord, he couldn’t even ask.
“Let’s take a look at the situation first.”
In the end he had no choice but to figure out what she was talking about. As they left the study, she pointed to a place without any floor.
What she was pointing at was a mass of light beyond the railing, inside the tower. Only then did Reed get a sense of what she was talking about.
All tower floors are stacked layer by layer in the shape of a donut with a hole in the middle.
It was designed so as it was the most optimized structure to shoot the mana from the ley lines to the Upper Floors of the Tower.
As the mana is shooting up, it’s called a Pillar.
The blue light illuminates the insides of the tower, is used as fuel to replenish mana for Magic Research and is used in all the Magic Engineering Products.
“A lot of mana is being shot.’
The Mana Pills are purely made up of neatly arranged columns of magic. It won’t be false if someone said that the mass of light was piercing the sky
Normal heart sounds come in pairs. The sounds are often described as a constant “lub-dub, lub-dub.” The first “lub-dub” is the sound of the mitral and tricuspid valves closing. The second “lub-dub” is the sound of the aortic and pulmonary valves closing soon after. … This is called a heart murmur.
